A public holiday with separate rules

New Caledonia’s labour code lists 11 November among the public holidays for the private sector. A separate order lists it as a public holiday for public services and says those services close on the listed holidays. The legal listing does not establish which private businesses will close, so employees and visitors should check directly with their workplace or service provider.[1][2]

The date stays on 11 November. No general substitute day is specified when it falls on a weekend.[1]

The local history behind the date

The armistice of 11 November 1918 brought the First World War’s fighting to an end. For New Caledonia, remembrance is tied to the island’s own contribution to the war: more than 2,000 Caledonians went to the European front, including Kanak tirailleurs who joined from 1917.[3]

The New Caledonian government records that 575 soldiers from the territory died in the war: 382 Kanak tirailleurs and 193 other Caledonians. The official account of the 2018 centenary described the ceremony as a way to keep this wartime effort in collective memory.[3]

Ceremonies in Nouméa and other towns

Commemorations have included official ceremonies at the war memorial on Place Bir-Hakeim in Nouméa, with civil and military authorities and wreath-laying. In one centenary ceremony, school pupils also placed flowers at the memorial.[3][4]

Commemorations have also taken place in other communities. Government reports have recorded ceremonies in Boulouparis, Dumbéa, Païta and Mont-Dore, as well as Nouméa. These reports show local participation beyond the capital, though the exact programme and locations can vary from year to year.[4]
