Meaning and place in the calendar

Whit Monday, also called Pentecost Monday, follows Pentecost Sunday. In Christian tradition, Pentecost commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit to Jesus’s disciples; the Monday is the next day in the calendar.[2]

Madagascar’s connection to the feast is visible both in its official holiday calendar and in church life. The FJKM, the Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar, lists a worship service for Pentecost Sunday in its church events calendar. That is an example from one church, rather than evidence that all Malagasy Christians observe the Monday in the same way.[3]

Public holiday status

Madagascar’s Labour Code says public holidays are non-working and paid, and requires the government to set the annual list by decree after consultation with the National Labour and Employment Council. Government decrees in successive years have included the Monday of Pentecost in that list.[1][2]

The annual decree lists Whit Monday as its own holiday after Pentecost Sunday. It is not described there as a substitute for a holiday that fell on a Sunday. The reviewed legal texts do not establish a general replacement-day rule for Whit Monday, so check the applicable annual decree for the holiday list.[1][2]

The holiday is generally a day off for workers, but the rule has exceptions. The annual decree allows certain establishments and worker categories whose activities cannot stop to work on public holidays, under categories set by ministerial order.[1][4]

Work, services and practical planning

The ministerial order names examples of work that may continue, including hospitals and pharmacies, transport companies, hotels and restaurants, tourism operators, food retailers, other retail businesses, and security staff. It also lists some industrial and agricultural work. Employees in these categories may therefore find that their workplace remains open, although the order does not provide opening hours for individual businesses.[4]

Check opening hours with government offices and banks before you go. Check with banks, shops and transport providers for their schedules. Transport and retail services are among the sectors permitted to work.[1][4]

Check local listings for food customs, regional ceremonies or special events. FJKM holds Pentecost Sunday services, but these do not establish a uniform Monday observance across Madagascar.[3]
