Public holiday and time off

Madagascar’s Labour Code says public holidays are non-working and paid, and requires the government to set the exhaustive list of holidays by decree at the start of each year.[1]

The law does not establish that every workplace closes: it allows rules for exceptions to holiday rest, and the code refers to workers who may be employed under those exceptions. Check opening hours with the office, bank, shop, school or transport operator before you go.[1]

A continental anniversary with Malagasy roots

The OAU Charter was adopted on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa. The African Union describes the OAU’s aims as promoting unity and solidarity, coordinating cooperation for development, and defending the sovereignty and independence of its member states. The African Union succeeded the OAU in 2002.[2]

Madagascar is part of this history: the African Union’s member-state list records the country as joining the OAU on May 25, 1963. Africa Day therefore marks both a continental founding and Madagascar’s early participation in the organization.[3]

How it is marked in Madagascar

A documented Malagasy observance has taken place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Antananarivo. In its report, the ministry described speeches affirming Madagascar’s commitment to African unity and development, with education as a focus of the event. It characterized the day as celebrating African independence, unity, determination, values and ambitions.[4]

That report documents an official ministry event, not a uniform custom across the country. Visitors should check local event information and should not assume that concerts, family meals or street events are customary everywhere.[4]

Planning for the day

Because Africa Day is a public holiday, workers covered by the Labour Code are generally entitled to a paid day off, subject to the rules for permitted exceptions. Check directly with the service you plan to use, especially outside Antananarivo.[1][4]
