Good Friday in Hungary
Good Friday, called Nagypéntek in Hungarian, is a statutory public holiday that falls on the Friday before Easter Sunday. It combines a nationwide employment rule with a solemn day in the Christian calendar, observed in Catholic churches through prayers and veneration of the cross.[1][3]
Meaning and observance
For Christians, Good Friday recalls Jesus Christ’s condemnation, suffering, death and burial. In Hungary, Catholic observances include readings of the Passion, prayers for the Church and the wider world, and veneration of the cross; worshippers may also pray at the symbolic tomb after the service.[3]
The Hungarian Catholic Church describes Good Friday as a day of strict fasting and abstinence from meat for Catholics, alongside the Stations of the Cross and the chanting of Lamentations. These are church practices, not customs that can be assumed for every resident or household.[3]
How it became a public holiday
Hungary added Good Friday to its statutory public holidays in 2017. The change was made through an amendment to the Labour Code, following a public announcement in 2016 that the day would become a holiday.[1][2]
The change was presented by the government as a way to facilitate the observance of Good Friday, and the announcement was made at a commemorative session of the Hungarian Reformed Church Synod during the Reformation Year.[2]
Work and practical planning
Under Hungary’s Labour Code, Good Friday is a public holiday. Ordinary working hours may be assigned only in specified cases, including some continuous, seasonal or socially necessary work. An annual ministerial decree can also adjust the work schedule around public holidays; the Code does not set an automatic substitute weekday for Good Friday when it falls on a weekend.[1]
Because the day is a public holiday, plan ahead for errands and check opening times with individual businesses and service providers. The legal holiday status does not mean every workplace or service closes: the Labour Code allows work in defined cases. Check transport, bank and public counter opening times before you go.[1]
