Hungary’s first official May Day protest took place in Budapest’s City Park in 1890, according to a study of labour protests. After the Second World War, the ruling socialist party took control of the holiday’s public observance. State-era celebrations included organized marches and military parades, and the study describes how those tightly planned displays changed over time.[2]
The National Archives likewise identifies May 1 as one of the ideologically significant state holidays during the socialist period. Its historical account notes that the day also commemorated workers’ economic and social gains, linking its political history to the broader idea of workers’ solidarity.[3]
