What April 3 means in Guinea

An earlier decree listed April 3 as Guinea’s “fête Nationale.” That decree also listed October 2 as the anniversary of independence, giving the two dates distinct meanings in the legal text of the time.[2]

A date in Guinea’s political history

Guinea’s 1990 Fundamental Law describes the country’s formation as a sovereign state on October 2, 1958, and refers separately to the “political change” of April 3, 1984.[3] The two dates mark distinct moments in Guinea’s modern history. Ask local organisers about events and customs.

Current legal status and practical effects

The 2022 decree revising Guinea’s legal holidays lists October 2 as Independence anniversary but does not list April 3. It sets paid, non-working holidays across the public, private, and mixed sectors nationwide. Its next-working-day rule applies when Independence Day, New Year, or Eid al-Fitr falls on a non-working day; it does not establish a general substitute day for April 3.[1]

For holidays that are legally designated, Guinea’s Labour Code says they are paid even when they fall on a Sunday or the weekly rest day, and that work lost is not made up later. The 2022 decree also makes work suspension the general rule while allowing services that cannot interrupt their activities to continue.
