Easter Monday in Gibraltar

A public holiday under Gibraltar law

The Employment (Annual and Public Holidays) Order names Easter Monday among Gibraltar’s public holidays. The Order is dated 17 December 1968 and commenced on 1 January 1969.[1]

The Order does not promise that every employee will be off work. It sets out holiday pay for employees who are not required to work, subject to conditions, and provides for a day in lieu or additional pay when an employee works on a public holiday. The Order excludes employees in the Dock Labour Pool and employees of official employers who belong to the Official Employers Joint Industrial Council.[1]

There is no automatic substitute day for Easter Monday. The Order does, however, allow other days to be substituted for listed public holidays in some employment settings, by agreement between employer and employee or their representative, where observing the listed days is not customary or practised.[1]

Meaning and local observance

Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday. In Christian belief, Easter Sunday celebrates Jesus’ resurrection, which the Anglican Communion identifies as central to the Easter observance.[4]

For Gibraltar, the clearest documented feature is its place in the official holiday calendar. The Tourist Board lists it among Gibraltar’s public holidays, but the official material reviewed does not confirm a particular Gibraltar ceremony, food, family custom, outdoor gathering or regional variation for the day.[2]

What closes and what to check

A Gibraltar government notice for Easter 2015 said government offices would be closed through Easter Monday, and its schedule also listed closures for post office counters and postal services during parts of the Easter period. This is an example from that year, not a guarantee of opening arrangements in every year.[3]
