The President’s 2023 order declaring August 14 a public holiday cites the national law regulating legal holidays, as amended in 1976. That order named a specific additional day across the country; it does not establish a routine substitute day for every Assumption falling on a weekend.[2]
What the Assumption means
For Catholics, the feast concerns the belief that Mary was taken into heavenly glory body and soul. Pope Pius XII formally defined this teaching as a dogma in 1950, while his apostolic constitution also describes the Church’s veneration and celebration of the mystery over many centuries.[3]
A documented celebration in Yaoundé
A Mass for the Assumption was celebrated at Yaoundé’s Notre-Dame des Victoires Cathedral, presided over by the Archbishop of Yaoundé. The congregation prayed and renewed its devotion to Mary; in his homily, the archbishop described her as a figure of peace, unity and hope for the faithful.[4]
