Assumption in Senegal
Senegal lists 15 August as a legal holiday, and the date is observed by Catholic communities as the Feast of the Assumption. The law classifies legal holidays as non-working days; it does not give the Assumption a substitute day when it falls on Sunday.[1][2]
A legal holiday on 15 August
Senegal’s 1974 law on national and legal holidays includes the “day of 15 August” in its list of legal holidays. The same law says legal holidays are non-working. It separately names certain holidays as both non-working and paid, so the text does not establish that every legal holiday carries the same pay treatment.[1]
The law gives a specific Monday substitute when Korité or Tabaski falls on Sunday. It does not state a comparable substitute rule for 15 August.[1]
What the feast means
For Catholics, the Assumption commemorates the belief that, at the end of her earthly life, Mary was taken into heaven body and soul. Pope Pius XII formally defined this belief as Catholic dogma in 1950. The feast is part of the wider Catholic calendar, while its inclusion among Senegal’s legal holidays gives it a place in the country’s statutory calendar too.[3][4]

RTS reported special Masses and celebrations in churches across the country for the feast, including at the Marian sanctuary of Popenguine.[4]
A Senegalese Catholic spokesperson described the day as a time of devotion to Mary and prayer for people facing hardship.[4]
