The Assumption commemorates the Catholic belief that Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was taken into heavenly glory. The Catholic Church’s Code of Canon Law names the Assumption among its feast days and says the faithful are to participate in Mass on holy days of obligation.[4]

Mugera’s Assumption gathering
Official reports describe Mugera, in Gitega Province, as a focal point for the feast. In 2024, the President and First Lady joined Christians there for a solemn Mass; the Presidency reported that people gather at the site annually for the Assumption.[3]
The site also carries a specifically Burundian association with the feast. A presidential account says Prince Louis Rwagasore and Catholic bishops consecrated Burundi to the Virgin Mary at Mugera on 15 August 1961. In 2024, a special prayer at the Mass recalled that act.[3]
Work and practical planning
The 2021 decree says listed holidays must not reduce daily, weekly or monthly wages. Workers who are employed on those holidays are entitled to their usual holiday indemnity as well as additional payment for the work, with an overtime increase where applicable.[2]
The decree provides for a listed holiday that coincides with Sunday to be moved to the next working day when it is considered inadvisable to observe it on Sunday.
