Legal status and date

The Public Holidays Act names Easter Monday in its national schedule. It also says that when a scheduled holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed as a public holiday. Easter Monday itself is already a Monday in the Easter calendar, so the Act does not set out a separate substitute day specifically for it.[1]

The Act makes an exception for the mining industry: only Christmas Day, Good Friday and Botswana Day are public holidays there under this law. Employment law separately lists Easter Monday as a paid public holiday. Employees who work on a paid public holiday must receive at least double their ordinary wages or a paid day off in lieu; the Act also provides for basic pay for each paid public holiday. Botswana’s law gives the day national holiday status but does not prescribe a religious service or a particular way to observe it. What to expect
