Christmas Day in Botswana

Legal status and observance rules

Botswana’s Public Holidays Act includes Christmas Day in its schedule of public holidays. If a scheduled public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed as a public holiday. The Act does not extend that general Sunday rule to a Saturday Christmas; its specific Saturday substitute rule applies to Botswana Day.[1]

The Act also makes Christmas Day one of only three public holidays observed in the mining industry, alongside Good Friday and Botswana Day. The Employment Act lists Christmas Day as a paid public holiday. In general, an employee required to work on a paid public holiday must receive at least double the ordinary wages or a paid day off in lieu within 10 days. The Employment Act provides a special rule for mining industry holidays.[1][2]

The Government of Botswana’s holiday listing identifies Christmas Day on 25 December. The date stays fixed, while the weekday changes from year to year.[3]

Church services and community observances

Christmas marks the Christian celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth. Reports from Botswana give examples of church services in different places: in Gaborone, the President and First Lady attended a Christmas service at Trinity UCCSA in 2023; in East Hanahai, a Dutch Reformed church held a service for children in 2024.[4][5]

The East Hanahai report describes a gathering at the church the night before Christmas, with teaching about Jesus’s birth and messages of love and salvation. It also records a missionary family’s pledge to share a meal with elderly people and children. These are examples reported from particular communities, rather than evidence that every household follows the same customs.[5]

At the Gaborone service, the sermon spoke about love and forgiveness, and the congregation was urged to support a peaceful and harmonious community.[4]

Planning for the public holiday

Government service listings give weekday opening hours and state that offices are closed on public holidays. Travellers who need a government service should plan to visit on another day.[6]

Christmas opening hours for banks, shops and public transport vary by provider and location, so check directly before travelling or relying on a particular outlet. There is no standard Christmas menu or particular national dish.[5][6]
