A holiday period set by law

In the Federation, the government says the holiday law applied there designates 1 May as International Labour Day and observes it over two days, 1 and 2 May. The government describes the law as a former Yugoslav holiday law applied as federal law, and says that if either day falls on a Sunday, the next day after the two-day period is also a holiday.[1]

Republika Srpska law also lists International Labour Day on 1 and 2 May. Its law says that republic holidays falling on non-working days cannot be transferred to the next working day, so the Federation’s substitute-day rule does not apply there.[2]

Rules differ by jurisdiction

Brčko District law lists Labour Day on 1 and 2 May and says a district holiday falling on Sunday transfers to the first working day afterward. A later amendment says district institutions, businesses, entrepreneurs and other legal entities do not work during district holidays, with exceptions for vital or continuous services and activities that meet community needs.[3][4]

These separate legal arrangements make the second day a locally grounded public holiday rather than a uniform nationwide closure. In the Federation, employers, institutions, administrative bodies and other legal entities do not work on holidays; in Republika Srpska, the law also provides for republic and local government bodies, enterprises and other organizations not to work, while allowing designated operations to continue.[1][2]
