Labour Day in Zambia
Labour Day is observed in Zambia on 1 May and is listed as a public holiday throughout the country. The law moves the holiday to the following Monday when 1 May falls on a Sunday.[1]
Date and legal status
Zambia’s Public Holidays Act includes Labour Day, dated 1 May, in its schedule of nationwide public holidays. If a scheduled holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed instead; the Act does not set a general substitute day for a Saturday.[1]
The Employment Code sets out pay rules for public holidays designated as paid. It provides for full pay for an eligible employee who is not absent without permission or reasonable excuse on the workday immediately before or after the holiday. If an employee normally works on a paid public holiday, the applicable rate may be set by a collective agreement, employment contract or regulation.[2]
How Labour Day began in Zambia
An account published in 1968 described that year’s 1 May as the first time International Labour Day had been declared a public holiday in Zambia. It reported that the government acted after a request from the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions, linking the observance to the international working-class movement.[3]
That first observance included mass rallies in main towns and processions in some rural districts. In Kitwe, workers from across the Copperbelt marched through the city. The account described the event as involving the wider public as well as workers.[3]
Commemorations and meaning
Official commemorations recognize the contribution of Zambian workers to national development. They can include a march-past, demonstrations and speeches by national leaders, workers’ representatives and employers. At the 2024 national commemoration in Solwezi, workers took part in a march-past and demonstrations, and the President addressed the gathering.[4]
The national event’s venue can differ between commemorations: the Cabinet Office listed Solwezi as the venue in 2024. That example does not establish a fixed rotation between provinces or a permanent national venue.[4]
