Labour Day in Vanuatu
Labour Day is a public holiday in Vanuatu on 1 May. The Public Holidays Act lists it by name and date, while employment law sets limits on requiring staff to work on public holidays.[1][2]
Legal status and employment rules
Vanuatu’s Public Holidays Act, Chapter 114, names Labour Day (1 May) in its schedule of public holidays. If a listed public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is also a public holiday; the Act does not set a general substitute day for a holiday that falls on Saturday.[1]
Under the Employment Act, employees generally cannot be required to work on a public holiday unless they agree voluntarily. The Act makes exceptions for specified services and workplaces, including passenger or goods transport, public utilities, hotels and restaurants, health care, broadcasting and animal husbandry. Employees working under those exceptions must receive equivalent time off on another day. The Department of Labour’s guide also states that overtime for public-holiday work is paid at a minimum of one and a half times the normal hourly rate when it exceeds normal hours.[2]

Closures and practical plans
The Public Holidays Act does not automatically require every shop to close. It allows the President to order stores, shops or other businesses to close on a public holiday, with exceptions for medicines, certain staple foods sold by noon, and refreshments served where they are habitually consumed.[1]
