From Armistice Day to Veterans Day
The armistice ending major First World War hostilities took effect on 11 November 1918. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day commemoration in 1919, and Congress later made the date a legal holiday.
In 1954, after the Second World War and Korean War, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars. A later experiment with an October Monday ended, and the observance returned to 11 November in 1978.
