For workers covered by Taiwan’s Labor Standards Act, Peace Memorial Day is a national holiday. If it falls on a day the worker was scheduled to work, the employer must provide the holiday; the Ministry of Labor says this also applies to part-time and hourly workers. When a holiday coincides with a worker’s regular rest day, a substitute day off is arranged under the applicable rules. What happened in 1947

The incident began after a February 27, 1947 confrontation in Taipei involving officials enforcing the tobacco monopoly and a street vendor. On February 28, protests grew; soldiers fired on demonstrators, and unrest spread beyond the capital. The Memorial Foundation’s account describes multiple causes, including public anger at government misconduct and economic hardship, rather than a single cause.[3][4]

The government’s military crackdown and subsequent purges caused deaths, injuries, arrests, and lasting harm. The Foundation connects the later White Terror and authoritarian rule to the aftermath. The day therefore recalls a painful period in Taiwan’s history and the efforts to investigate the events, acknowledge victims, and support historical understanding.[3][4]

How Taiwan commemorates the day

The 228 Memorial Foundation says it holds a central commemoration on February 28, with a presidential address, and religious services for victims and their families. It also organizes cultural and educational activities, including commemorative concerts and exhibitions.[5]

The National 228 Memorial Museum in Taipei preserves and presents material about the incident as a memorial and educational venue. Practical planning

Government offices follow the annual government work calendar, while private-sector holiday rights are governed separately under labor rules.
