A turning point in Türkiye’s history

On 29 October 1923, the Grand National Assembly proclaimed the republic and elected Gazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha president. The following day, İsmet İnönü formed the republic’s first government. Republic Day recalls this change in Türkiye’s system of government and the founding of the republic.[2]

A national holiday with a set start

Law No. 2429, the Law on National and General Holidays, identifies 29 October as the national holiday marking the republic’s proclamation. The holiday begins at 1 p.m. on 28 October and continues through 29 October. The law provides for state ceremonies on this day in Türkiye and at Turkish representations abroad.[1]

The law also designates national holidays as general holidays and says public offices and organizations close. It requires private workplaces to close on 29 October, while noting that rules for organizations whose duties must continue are governed by their special laws. The law does not describe a substitute day when 29 October falls on a weekend.[1]

Ceremonies and public events

The ceremony regulations provide for official observances, including a wreath at Anıtkabir, the national anthem and raising the flag, and an official reception. Local ceremonies are organized through committees led by provincial governors or district governors, with relevant public bodies and civil society representatives involved.[3]

Celebrations also include public events. The Presidency’s Directorate of Communications describes concerts, visual and video projects, light shows and digital exhibitions as part of its annual Republic Day activities. What to expect as a visitor

Plan for public offices and private workplaces to be closed on 29 October, subject to the legal exception for organizations required to keep operating. The law does not set out opening hours for individual shops, banks or transport services, so check directly with the business or operator before making plans.[1]
