Why April 6 matters

The day remembers King Phutthayotfa Chulalok, known as Rama I, as the first monarch of the Chakri dynasty. Thailand’s Department of Cultural Promotion says April 6 was chosen because it corresponds to the day Rama I came to the capital and was invited to rule in 1782.[1][2]

The date also marks the beginning of Rattanakosin, the historic royal city established across the river from Thonburi. The Thai government’s historical account describes Rama I’s move of the capital from Thonburi and the building of Bangkok, including the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.[2]

How the observance began

The annual observance took shape in 1918, during the reign of King Vajiravudh, or Rama VI. After royal statues of earlier kings were installed at Prasat Phra Thep Bidorn, an annual ceremony of paying respects to the statues was proclaimed for April 6.[1]

Chakri Memorial Day is therefore both a remembrance of the dynasty’s founding and a royal commemorative occasion. It is specific to Thailand’s history and monarchy; it is not a religious festival with a shared international calendar.[1][2]

Ceremonies and public observance

The official ceremony centers on paying respects to statues of earlier monarchs. A government notice for a Chakri Day royal ceremony at the Grand Palace invited members of the public to pay respects at the Royal Pantheon, Prasat Phra Debidorn.[3]

That notice also shows why visitors should check arrangements before going to the palace grounds: public access can vary between buildings during ceremonies. It described different access arrangements for the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Royal Pantheon.[3]

Work, banks and planning

Thailand lists Chakri Memorial Day as a public holiday. For employees covered by the Labour Protection Act, employers must set at least 13 traditional holidays each year, including National Labour Day, using annual official, religious or local customary holidays as a basis. If a selected traditional holiday falls on an employee’s weekly day off, the Act provides a substitute day on the next working day.[4][5]

The Bank of Thailand includes Chakri Memorial Day in its holiday schedule for financial institutions and specialised financial institutions. Bank branches may therefore be closed; check with a particular bank for its service arrangements.[5]

Chakri Memorial Day is observed on April 6, while the employment rule on substitute days depends on an employee’s weekly rest day and workplace holiday schedule. Government offices, shops, schools and transport operators may follow different operating arrangements, so check directly before making plans.[1][4][5]
