Ascension Day in Eswatini

Public holiday status

The Public Holidays Act, 1938 includes Ascension Day in its schedule of public holidays. It says that when a scheduled holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is observed as a public holiday. Ascension Day falls on a Thursday, so that Sunday rule does not apply to its usual calendar date.[1][2]

A Government Gazette wage order also lists Ascension Day among the paid public holidays for employees covered by that order. This supports a paid-holiday entitlement in the industries it regulates; it does not establish that every workplace closes. Check opening hours with the office, business or transport provider before you go.[2]

Across Christian traditions, Ascension Day commemorates Christ’s ascension into heaven. The feast is observed on the Thursday forty days after Easter, which is why its date changes from year to year.[3]
