Senegal’s Law No. 74-52, adopted in 1974 and reproduced in the International Labour Organization’s NATLEX collection, names 25 December as a legal holiday. It states that legal holidays are non-working. The law does not classify Christmas Day as a paid holiday; its paid-holiday provision names other days.[1]

The statute expressly provides a Monday holiday when Korité or Tabaski falls on a Sunday, but it states no equivalent automatic substitute day for Christmas. The government separately declared the Monday after Christmas a paid, non-working day in 2022 under a decree, so that was a specific decision rather than a general Christmas rule.[1][2]

Religious meaning and observance

Christmas marks the Christian celebration of the Nativity, the birth of Jesus. Senegal’s president has addressed Christmas greetings to the Christian community and offered prayers with the nation for peace and prosperity, reflecting the holiday’s place in public life as well as in Christian worship.[2]

Reports from Saint-Louis and Mbour illustrate some local observances without implying that every community follows the same pattern. In Saint-Louis, the diocese held celebrations on 24 and 25 December, including a Nativity-night service with singing and prayers for peace. In Mbour, a midnight Christmas Mass brought together many worshippers, and the priest’s message emphasized human fraternity among Christians and Muslims.[3][4]
