Sri Lankan Buddhist accounts associate Navam Poya with the Buddha appointing Sariputta and Moggallana as his chief disciples. They also connect the day with the Ovada Patimokkha, a discourse described as guidance for the conduct and discipline of the monastic community.[4]

A public and bank holiday

Sri Lanka’s Holidays Act declares every Full Moon Poya Day a public holiday and a bank holiday. The Central Bank’s holiday list identifies Navam Full Moon Poya Day as both, and the Act requires banks to observe bank holidays as close holidays.[1][3]

For people employed in shops and offices, the Department of Labour says a Full Moon Poya Day is a holiday. If it coincides with a weekly holiday or another specified holiday under the Act, those employees are not entitled to an additional day in lieu under that provision.[2]

The Colombo Navam Perahera

A distinctive Sri Lankan observance is the Navam Maha Perahera organized by Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo. The temple says it has held the procession continuously since 1979, with dancers and drummers from regions across the island, Buddhist monks, and a tusker carrying a sacred relic casket.[5]
