Meaning and observance

For Christians, Good Friday recalls Jesus’ suffering and death on the Cross. The Archdiocese of Colombo describes it as a day of silence, prayer and veneration of the Cross, with believers invited to reflect on the meaning of his sacrifice.[3]

In Sri Lanka, Catholic pastoral guidance from the Archdiocese of Colombo calls for the Way of the Cross in churches and on parish streets, especially on Good Friday.[4]

Public and bank holiday status

Sri Lanka’s Holidays Act provides for public and bank holidays. It says that public holidays are to be kept as holidays and that every bank must close on a bank holiday. The Central Bank’s holiday calendar lists Good Friday as both a public holiday and a bank holiday.[1][2]

The public holiday designation gives Good Friday formal recognition in the country’s calendar. The Act also allows the minister to amend or replace the schedules of public and bank holidays by an order published in the Gazette.[1]

Planning around the holiday

Expect banks to be closed. The Central Bank calendar marks Good Friday as a bank holiday, and the Holidays Act requires banks to observe bank holidays as close holidays.[1][2]

Check opening hours and services with shops, restaurants, schools and public transport providers; do not assume that every business or transport service closes nationwide.[2]

A date tied to Easter

Good Friday falls on the Friday before Easter Sunday, so its calendar date changes from year to year. Sri Lanka’s holiday calendar follows that movable date for its public and bank holiday listing.[2]
