Two observances, one date when they coincide
Labour Day, also called International Workers’ Day, is fixed on 1 May. Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister’s Office traces the country’s labour movement to the printers’ strike of 1893 and describes later trade union activity and strikes as part of workers’ struggle for rights and dignity.[1]
Vesak follows the full moon and commemorates the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and passing. Because its date is lunar, it does not fall on 1 May every year; when the dates do coincide, as listed in Sri Lanka’s official bank holiday calendar, the day carries both observances.[2][3]

Sri Lanka’s Holidays Act declares every Full Moon Poya Day a public and bank holiday. It says public holidays are to be kept as holidays and that banks must close on bank holidays; the official calendar also lists May Day as a public and bank holiday.[2][3]

How people mark the day
For workers, the day recognizes labour rights and the contribution of working people. The Prime Minister’s Office connects Sri Lanka’s labour history with organizing for rights, justice and dignity, including the trade union movement and strikes in sectors such as railways and public service.[1]
Vesak observances include temple sermons and the lighting of lanterns. A Sri Lankan Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vesak event also included a Dansala, a free food offering organized in the spirit of giving and compassion; this provides an official example of customs visitors may encounter.[4]
Practical effects
Banks close on bank holidays under the Holidays Act. The law also provides for the closure of certain establishments on Full Moon Poya Days, but it does not establish that every shop, restaurant, school or transport service closes; check with individual businesses and transport operators before travelling.[2]
