Legal status and dates

Kazakhstan’s Holidays Law lists International Women’s Day among its state holidays. It defines holidays as non-working days and says that when a day off coincides with a holiday, the day off moves to the next working day. The Labour Code also allows employees to work on a holiday in specified circumstances; when they do, they are entitled, at their request, to another rest day or payment under the Code.[1][2]

The holiday is observed on March 8 each year. If the date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the statutory rule provides for the next working day off; the weekday depends on the work calendar. For shift workers and services that continue operating, rest days may follow a different schedule.[1][2]

The holiday recognizes women and their contributions to family and public life. Local government accounts describe celebrations that honor women working in fields such as education, public service, agriculture, business and culture, as well as mothers and community members.[3][4]
