A national day rooted in Iceland’s history

On June 17, 1944, Iceland’s republican constitution took effect, establishing the republic. Alþingi’s record identifies that date as the day the republic was declared, and the constitution itself took effect on June 17.[2][3]

The date also honors Jón Sigurðsson, a leading figure in Iceland’s independence movement. Reykjavík’s city guide says June 17 is his birthday and describes the national holiday as commemorating the republic’s founding.[1]

A public holiday on a fixed date

Iceland’s Act No. 88/1971 lists June 17 among the days off under its working-time rules. Those rules apply to most wage earners, with listed exclusions, and allow certain approved agreements to vary their terms.[4]

The holiday is held on June 17 each year. The calendar listing gives no substitute day when the date falls on a weekend, so plan around the date itself.[1][4]

Ceremonies and the Lady of the Mountain

In Reykjavík, the official program at Austurvöllur includes a ceremony connected with Alþingi and the Prime Minister’s Office. The Lady of the Mountain, or Fjallkonan, represents Iceland in human form; an actress portrays her in traditional Icelandic women’s dress and recites a poem at the ceremony.[5]

A parade and public entertainment are also part of Reykjavík’s celebrations. The city’s event information describes parades, concerts, street theater and family activities, while its Lady of the Mountain page explains the figure’s ceremonial role.[5][6]

National Day is observed beyond the capital. Akureyri’s official tourism site describes the town as decorating itself with flags and holding a celebratory program for June 17.[7] Reykjavík’s program offers one example of local festivities, but events and schedules can differ by place.[6][7]

For visitors, the Reykjavík celebrations can affect travel through the city center: the municipality’s June 17 page notes that road closures are in effect during festivities.
