Commerce Day in Iceland

A holiday for shop workers

The observance predates its legal status as a general holiday. Alþýðusamband Íslands (ASÍ) says shop workers first celebrated it in the latter half of the 19th century. The first Monday in August became a statutory day off in 1983 under Iceland’s Act on a 40-hour working week.[2][1]

The law’s general scope is wage earners, with specified exceptions. ASÍ explains that daytime workers are not required to work on public holidays unless they agree to do so; eligible workers receive regular daytime pay, and work performed on a public holiday is paid at an overtime rate in addition.[1][3] The law sets Commerce Day on a Monday. ASÍ’s guidance on transferring holidays concerns certain holidays that fall on Thursdays, rather than Commerce Day.[4]

Verslunarmannahelgi and public events

The three-day weekend around Commerce Day is called Verslunarmannahelgi. The City of Reykjavík describes it as a major travel weekend, with outdoor festivals held around Iceland. The name reflects the holiday’s connection to commerce, while the weekend has become a broader summer break.[5]

One established gathering is Þjóðhátíð in the Westman Islands. The municipality says the festival is held annually around Verslunarmannahelgi. Its roots go back to 1874, when island residents held their own national celebration after bad weather prevented them from reaching mainland Iceland for the celebration of the thousandth anniversary of Iceland’s settlement. Events in Herjólfsdal include concerts, family activities and the Sunday evening brekkusöng, when people sing together by candlelight.[6]

Commerce Day’s clearest practical effect is on work: the employment rules provide a public holiday for eligible daytime workers, while allowing work by agreement and setting holiday pay rules. Check opening hours with shops, banks or transport operators before making plans.[1][3]
