The Isle of Man Treasury publishes the island’s bank holiday dates under the Bank Holidays Act 1989, including Christmas Day on 25 December. The Government’s published list distinguishes Christmas Day from a substitute day for Boxing Day, so the two dates should not be confused.[1]

Manx National Heritage’s folklore guide records Christmas celebrations that included a mummers’ play performed by the White Boys, known in Manx as Ny Guillyn Baney. A local account from Castletown describes the performers’ white clothing, coloured ribbons and a character dressed as a doctor; the account associated the play with the death, resurrection and Ascension of Christ.[2]
The same guide records other groups, including Wren Boys and the Mollag Band, going around with music and dance. A Ramsey account describes the Hunt the Wren procession with a decorated pole and a wren.[2]
