Meaning and Gambian significance

In Catholic belief, the feast commemorates Mary being taken into heaven, body and soul, at the end of her earthly life. The Diocese of Banjul describes the Assumption as a sign of the hope that the faithful will share in the resurrection. The feast is also the patron celebration of the Diocese, whose cathedral is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption.[2]

The local name Sang Marie is used for the celebration in The Gambia. The Vatican has also described Gambian devotion to Mary through the dedication of the cathedral, pilgrimages to the Shrine at Kungkujang–Miriam and prayer of the Rosary. The Diocese’s reporting describes Mass, Vespers and a Marian procession in Banjul among the central observances. A 2023 account records a Mass, Vespers and procession, followed by music from the Gambia Army Band and performances by traditional groups. Public holiday and practical planning

Assumption Day is a public holiday on August 15. Sang Marie is described as an off day for everyone. Check official government notices for year-specific substitute-day arrangements.[1][2]
