A public holiday under Fiji law

The Employment Relations Promulgation 2007 lists Easter Saturday among Fiji’s declared public holidays and says those days must be kept as public holidays in all workplaces. The law applies to most workplaces in Fiji, including government workplaces, though it excludes members of the military, police and prisons and correction services.[1]

For workers, the law provides payment for the hours they would normally have worked on a public holiday. A worker who works that day is also entitled to an additional single rate, subject to the conditions set out in the law.[1]

Some public holidays have automatic Monday or Tuesday substitutes when they fall on weekends; Easter Saturday is not among them. The law does let the Minister approve another day by Gazette notice if a listed holiday falls on a day other than Monday, so any change would need to be officially announced.[1]

The day in Easter observances

Easter commemorates the death of Jesus on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday, according to a message from Fiji’s Prime Minister. Easter Saturday sits between those observances in the holiday sequence.[2]

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Suva’s published parish schedule lists Easter Vigil services on Saturday evening at parishes in Suva, Lami, Savusavu, Nadi, Naililili and Lautoka. Listed service times differ by parish, so people planning to attend can check with their local church for current details.[3]

Fiji’s Prime Minister has described Easter as a time for families and communities to gather in homes, villages and wider communities, and encouraged care across religious and ethnic lines. That message presents Easter as part of life in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious country, while emphasizing its Christian meaning.[2]

Work, shops and travel

The public-holiday law applies across workplaces, but it does not give a nationwide opening-hours schedule for banks, shops or transport services. It also provides for workers to work on a public holiday, with the payment terms described above.[1]

The government’s public-holiday calendar lists Easter Saturday alongside Good Friday and Easter Monday. For practical plans, check directly with a workplace, bank, shop, bus or ferry operator because their opening hours and services may differ.[4]
