Public holiday and legal status

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland’s Church Act lists Christmas Day among the church holidays.[1] Åland’s public holiday list also includes 25 December as Christmas Day, and the University of Helsinki’s Finnish calendar information describes it as a paid public holiday.[2][3]

Public holidays are usually days off for employees, but whether a particular person is entitled to time off depends on their employment contract and collective agreement. The public holiday itself does not require shops or other businesses to close. The Åland calendar lists Christmas Day on 25 December and shows no substitute day when the date falls on a weekend.[2]

Christian meaning

Christmas Day commemorates the birth of Jesus. The Evangelical Lutheran Church describes Christmas morning worship as a time to give thanks for Christ’s coming; its account also explains the meaning of Christmas Eve and Midnight Mass within the Christmas observance.[1][5]

Åland’s Christmas season

A local custom that comes before Christmas Day is Lillajul, or Little Christmas. Visit Åland describes it as taking place on the Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent, with a smaller tree, small gifts and a more modest festive meal. The tradition is especially associated with families with children.[4]

Visit Åland also describes a traditional Lillajul market at the open-air museum Jan Karlsgården, near Kastelholm Castle, and seasonal markets, concerts and restaurant meals during December. Christmas Day follows the main Christmas Eve observances in the Finnish church calendar. The Evangelical Lutheran Church describes Christmas morning worship, while noting that church services are offered on Christmas Eve as well.[5]

Åland’s public holiday guidance says businesses may remain open on public holidays, so opening hours can vary; it also recommends checking the applicable employment agreement to understand individual time-off arrangements.[2]
