Aruba’s holiday and its meaning

The Government of Aruba lists Labor Day on 1 May among the island’s official holidays and says holidays are extra days off for employees, rather than vacation days deducted from leave.[1] The Department of Labor and Research (DAO) identifies the day in Papiamento as Dia di Labor or Dia di Obrero and explains that Article 22 of the Labor Ordinance 2013 sets the observed-day rule.[2]

When it is observed

Labour Day falls on 1 May. Under the rule described by DAO, if it falls on a Sunday or another holiday or commemorative day, the next working day becomes the official Labour Day observance.[2]

Work and practical arrangements

A day off is the general rule for sectors such as supermarkets and commerce, but working arrangements vary by sector. DAO says hospitality, casino and continuous shift-work employers may schedule staff on a holiday; the DAO’s guidance describes additional pay for employees who work, with rates and conditions varying by sector and hours.[3] Workers should check their schedule and applicable employment terms with their employer.
