Peace Day in Angola
Angola’s Peace Day, formally the Day of Peace and National Reconciliation, is a national public holiday on 4 April. It marks the 2002 end of the country’s civil war and recalls the work of building unity and reconciliation after conflict.[1][2]
A national holiday with a fixed date
Angola’s National Assembly lists 4 April as a national public holiday under Law No. 11/18, which amended the country’s holidays law. The law establishes a work suspension for national holidays across the public and private sectors; workers on shift schedules are an exception. In practice, this means many people have the day off, while essential or shift-based services may continue.[1][2]
The current law provides for a “bridge” day when a national holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday. It does not provide a substitute day when a holiday falls on Sunday. An earlier version of the law contained a Sunday transfer rule, but Law No. 11/18 replaced that section with the Tuesday-and-Thursday rule.[1][2]
The meaning of 4 April
Angolan government sources link the date to the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the government and UNITA on 4 April 2002, which ended the armed conflict.
