What the day means

Across the Commonwealth, the day is an annual opportunity to learn about and celebrate the association. The Commonwealth Secretariat says the March date was chosen because most children across the Commonwealth would be in school, making it suitable for shared learning and observance.[3]

Its place in the BVI calendar

Commonwealth Day formerly appeared on the British Virgin Islands’ public holiday calendar. In 2021, the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act replaced it with the Commemoration of the 1949 Great March and the Restoration of the Legislative Council. That change gives the local calendar a different focus: a BVI historical commemoration takes the place of the Commonwealth observance as a public holiday.[1]

The Government’s current public holiday schedule does not list Commonwealth Day. It does list the November commemoration, alongside other territory-wide holidays. The international observance still falls on the second Monday in March, but that date should not be treated as an official BVI day off.[2][3]

Observance and practical planning

Commonwealth Day can still be marked as an international observance. The Commonwealth Secretariat describes activities in member countries such as school assemblies, civic and faith gatherings, debates, flag-raising ceremonies, and cultural events.[3]

Because the day is not on the Government’s public holiday schedule, do not assume that government offices, schools, banks, shops, or transport services close or change their hours for it. Check directly with the office or service you plan to use.[2]
