Legal status and date

Togo’s Law No. 87-08 of June 9, 1987, declares January 1 the New Year holiday and recognizes it as a legal holiday across the national territory. The law gives the holiday a fixed calendar date, rather than a weekday-based rule.[1]

The Labour Code provides that a decree adopted by the Council of Ministers determines the list and regime of public holidays. The 1987 law does not set out a substitute-day rule for January 1.[1][2]

Public meaning and observance

The legal name identifies the day as the start of the new year. Separately, the Presidency of the Council describes the presentation of New Year wishes to national leaders as a republican tradition. In one reported ceremony, representatives of state institutions, government, traditional authorities, religious organizations, political parties, unions, business and civil society took part.[1][3]

That official ceremony documents a civic observance, but it does not establish how families across Togo celebrate. Check locally for household customs, church services, foods or regional New Year’s Day events; these are not universal.[3]
