The history behind Keti Koti
The Dutch government abolished slavery in Suriname on 1 July 1863. The emancipation was not immediate in practice: formerly enslaved people in Suriname were required to work for plantation owners under contract for ten more years, until 1873.[1]
Keti Koti is associated with the breaking of chains. Suriname’s president has described the day as both a time for reflection and a celebration of ancestors’ struggle and sacrifice, while also asking whether the chains that held enslaved people have truly been broken.[1][2]
