Saints Cyril and Methodius Day in Slovakia

A fixed date and state holiday

Slovakia’s state holiday law names July 5 as the Feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius. The date is fixed in the law, and the calendar lists no substitute or observed day when July 5 falls on a weekend.[1]

The government’s holiday list distinguishes state holidays from other days of rest. Under the law, July 5 is a day of rest. Work on a holiday is generally limited to certain permitted cases, including continuous operations and work needed for essential public needs; some employees may therefore still be scheduled.[1][2]

The Labor Inspectorate says employers may not schedule or agree with employees to perform most retail sales work on July 5. Exceptions include sales at fuel stations, pharmacies, airports and other public transport facilities, hospitals, ticket sales and souvenir sales. The rule restricts retail work; it does not itself prohibit a shop from opening.[3]

The mission remembered

Cyril and Methodius were brothers from Thessalonica who came to Great Moravia in 863 at the invitation of Prince Rastislav. The Nitra Diocese describes their mission as spreading Christianity and culture in a language local people could understand.[4]

Constantine, later known as Cyril, created the Glagolitic alphabet, and the brothers translated liturgy and parts of the Bible into Old Church Slavonic. Their work linked religious teaching with the development of written Slavic language and learning in the region.[4][5]

July 5 is a symbolic commemoration date, rather than a verified date of arrival: the Nitra Diocese says the brothers reached Great Moravia in spring 863. Their legacy is associated with Slovak religious and cultural heritage, and the tradition is also referenced in the preamble to Slovakia’s constitution.[4]

How the day is marked

Church services and pilgrimages are among the documented observances. In Nitra, a 2024 city program included a national Cyril and Methodius pilgrimage with a solemn Mass, alongside public access to parts of Nitra Castle and its diocesan museum.[6]

The same Nitra program paired religious observances with a historical festival, crafts, children’s activities and a market featuring Slovak specialties. This is a documented local example, not a nationwide menu or a guarantee of the same program each year. Check with local organisers for information about holiday dishes.[6]

Planning for the holiday

For practical planning, expect the retail-work restrictions to affect many ordinary shops, but check individual opening hours because legal exceptions apply. Public transport facilities are explicitly among the locations where retail sales may be exempt. Check bus and train timetables before travelling.[3]

A wider Christian commemoration

Cyril and Methodius are also commemorated beyond Slovakia as Christian missionaries associated with Slavic languages and religious life. In Slovakia, the day carries a distinct national status and is closely connected with the country’s Great Moravian heritage.[4][5]
