Legal status and time off

France’s Labour Code lists the Assumption among its legal holidays. For St. Pierre & Miquelon, the code’s special provisions exclude certain rules about the solidarity day, but do not exclude Assumption from the legal-holiday list.[1][2]

A legal holiday does not necessarily mean that every employee has the day off. The Labour Code says workplace agreements define which holidays are nonworking; if there is no applicable agreement, the employer sets them. Rules for pay also depend on the circumstances covered by the Code.[1]

Meaning and a local historical record

In Catholic teaching, the Assumption celebrates the belief that Mary was taken into heaven at the end of her earthly life.[4]

A parish calendar published in Le Foyer paroissial for August 1925 offers a specific local record. It identifies August 15 as both the Assumption and a patronal feast of France, and lists a pontifical mass for the colony’s faithful, followed by vespers, a traditional procession and a blessing of the Sacrament.[3]

Maritime traditions and present-day customs

The archipelago’s connection to the sea is reflected in a separate event described by the local tourism office: Sailors’ Day in June includes a mass, a procession to the harbour and a blessing of vessels.[5]
