History and meaning

On May 28, 1998, Pakistan conducted nuclear tests in the Chagai mountains of Balochistan. Pakistan’s national broadcaster describes the tests as a response to Indian nuclear explosions; the National Assembly’s account links the event to national defense and the balance of power in the region.[2][3]

The Cabinet Division’s public-holiday circular lists Youm-e-Takbeer as a public holiday on May 28. The Prime Minister also declared May 28, 2024, a public holiday throughout the country, giving the observance nationwide status in that year.[1][4]

The Cabinet circular sets out holidays year by year. Its calendar identifies Youm-e-Takbeer with a fixed date, May 28; it does not describe a replacement day for this observance when the date falls on a weekend.[1]

How the day is observed

Special prayers in mosques for the country’s peace and prosperity, Quran recitations and prayers have been part of observances across the country. These practices are not a required programme for every community or year.[3]
