The naval battle took place on October 8, 1879, during the War of the Pacific. The Peruvian monitor Huáscar, commanded by Miguel Grau Seminario, fought Chilean naval forces near Punta Angamos. The Huáscar was captured, and Grau died in the battle.[4]

For Peru, the date remembers the sailors who died and the naval history associated with Grau, known as the “Caballero de los Mares” or Knight of the Seas. October 8 is also the anniversary of the founding of the Peruvian Navy in 1821, so official commemorations often mark both occasions together.[2][5]
