The date’s meaning in Mali
The date recalls a pivotal moment in Mali’s early history. On January 20, 1961, President Modibo Keïta told the diplomatic corps that Mali had decided France should evacuate its military bases in Bamako, Kati, Gao and Tessalit. The National Archives of Mali preserves the account and the text of his statement on sovereignty and foreign troops.[2]
Malian official commemorations also identify January 20, 1961, with the armed forces’ foundation. In a speech marking the anniversary, President Bah N’Daw described the armed forces as a means of protecting the country’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and called the commemoration an occasion for citizens to unite around them.[3]

Reported Army Day ceremonies have included a wreath-laying at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, a flag salute, a review of troops by the head of state and a military parade.
