Why Nikini is observed

Nikini is linked in Sri Lankan accounts to the First Buddhist Council, also called the Sangayana, held after the Buddha’s passing. A Sri Lanka Army War College report describes Nikini as commemorating the council and notes the roles of Maha Kassapa Thera and Ananda Thera in its story.[3]

Nikini also has a place in Sri Lanka’s annual Buddhist calendar. The Sri Lanka Tourism Board associates the month with the Kandy Esala Perahera and annual processions at Seruwila Raja Maha Viharaya and Bellanwila Raja Maha Vihara.[2] These are month-long or seasonal connections; they do not mean that every event takes place on Poya day itself.

How people observe the day

Temple observances are one way people mark Nikini. A report from the Army War College records a Nikini programme at its temple that included a Dhamma sermon and participation by staff and student officers.[3] This example confirms a local religious programme, but does not establish a single custom followed by everyone across the country.

Visitors who plan to attend a temple can follow posted guidance and local requests about respectful conduct.[3]

Holiday status and practical effects

Sri Lanka’s Holidays Act declares every Full Moon Poya Day a public and bank holiday. It says public holidays are to be kept as holidays and requires every bank to close on a bank holiday.[1] The Central Bank also lists Nikini Full Moon Poya Day among its public and bank holidays.[4]

For people employed in shops or offices covered by the Shop and Office Employees Act, a Full Moon Poya Day is a holiday. The Act allows employment on that day subject to pay of at least one and a half times the normal daily rate. It does not provide an additional day off in lieu when Poya falls on a weekly holiday or another specified holiday.[5]

The Holidays Act names categories of premises that may not open for business on a Poya day, including liquor-selling premises, meat stalls, nightclubs, dance halls and public performance venues; it also prohibits slaughtering animals for sale and selling animal flesh. The Act allows certain public performances with prior written ministerial approval.[1] It does not mean that every shop, restaurant or transport service closes, so check with individual providers before making plans.
