Holiday status and time off

Saint Lucia’s Labour Code says an employer generally cannot require an employee to work on a designated public holiday without the employee’s agreement and overtime pay. It allows exceptions for certain work, including hospitality, emergency work and protective services.[1]

The University of the West Indies’ 2024 list of Saint Lucia public holidays includes Carnival Monday and Carnival Tuesday. That list helps distinguish the holiday observance from a single Carnival date: programmes and public-holiday calendars can identify different days within the wider season.[2]

A season of national events

Carnival is presented by Saint Lucia’s government as a cultural showcase. Its 2022 announcement describes national and private events and identifies Panorama, Calypso and Soca Monarch competitions, King and Queen of the Band, and the Queen Show among the season’s major events.[3]

The programme is coordinated by a committee that includes cultural, tourism, music and band organizations. Government reporting also describes the festival as a draw for visitors and notes the role of Castries City Council in cleaning up after the celebrations.[3][4]

Getting around during the parade

The Parade of the Bands can affect travel in and around Castries. In a published traffic plan, police described road closures and diversions, increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic, and temporary relocation of some bus stands during the parade.[4]

Those arrangements apply to the parade period, not automatically to every day listed as Carnival. Check current transport and event notices before setting out, especially if you need to travel through Castries. The cited traffic plan is an example of the measures used for a particular year, not a standing route plan.[4]
