Who is commemorated

Hasan al-Askari lived in Samarra and was the 11th Imam of the Twelver Shia. Encyclopaedia Iranica dates his death to 8 Rabi al-Awwal 260 AH, corresponding to January 1, 874, and says he was buried beside his father.[4]

The calendar’s name is easy to confuse with Hasan ibn Ali, also known as Hasan al-Mujtaba. He was the second Imam and a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad; his life and death belong to a separate historical account.[5]

Meaning of the date

Iran’s official calendar identifies 8 Rabi al-Awwal with the martyrdom of Hasan al-Askari and the beginning of the Imamate of the Mahdi. The day therefore links remembrance of the 11th Imam with the succession that is central to Twelver Shia belief.[1][4]

Iran’s official calendar marks the date as a holiday. The standing law listing national public holidays includes 28 Safar but does not name 8 Rabi al-Awwal; it also provides that the government may declare additional public holidays for important events.[1][2]
