Flag and Universities' Day in Haiti

A public holiday on May 18

Haiti’s Labour Code lists May 18 as a “jour férié chômé,” or nonworking public holiday. It says workers covered by the provisions are entitled to holiday rest without a reduction in pay. The code names May 18 as the date and does not specify a substitute weekday when it falls on a weekend.[1]

The flag and its meaning

The flag’s creation is associated with Arcahaie and the Haitian struggle against slavery. A Haitian government account describes Catherine Flon sewing together the blue and red bands in 1803. The government presents the bicolour as a symbol of unity and of the nation taking shape.[2]

Why universities share the day

The holiday joins remembrance of the flag with recognition of higher education. Haitian government speeches describe the university as a place to develop knowledge, prepare people to contribute to the country, and support national development. Official accounts describe commemorations in different Haitian cities. A government account of Cap-Haïtien traditions recalls schoolchildren parading in white, accompanied by bands and student groups in uniforms. The same account says people celebrate in cities such as Port-au-Prince, Gonaïves, and Arcahaie, while calling for observances throughout the country.[2]

The statutory holiday means workers covered by the Labour Code receive holiday rest, subject to the code’s provisions and exceptions. Visitors should check with individual providers before making plans.
