A date tied to Croatia’s democratic transition

On May 30, 1990, the newly elected representatives formed the multiparty Parliament of the then Socialist Republic of Croatia. The Croatian Parliament’s historical account says the date commemorates that session and notes that Franjo Tuđman described it as a first step toward reconnecting the Croatian people and state with European political, cultural and economic traditions.[2]

The date’s official name has changed over time. From 2001 until the end of 2019, May 30 was observed as Croatian Parliament Day; a law adopted in November 2019, in force from January 1, 2020, restored it as Croatia’s Statehood Day.[2]

Public holiday and paid leave

Croatia’s Holidays, Memorial Days and Non-Working Days Act lists May 30 as Statehood Day and a public holiday. Employees are entitled to salary compensation for the holiday, and the government may designate public bodies or other entities that must work that day.[1]

Official commemorations

Official commemorations can include remembrance ceremonies and public events. A Croatian Parliament report records a Zagreb observance with a wreath laid at the Monument to the Homeland, attendance at a mass for the homeland, a military equipment exhibition and an evening concert. Shops and practical planning

Retail sales premises are generally closed on public holidays under Croatia’s Trade Act. The law provides exceptions for specified locations and activities, including shops within transport hubs, petrol stations, hospitals, hotels and certain cultural or religious institutions; it also allows designated exceptions by government decision. Check the opening hours of a particular shop before travelling.[4]

The holiday law does not establish a blanket closure rule for every service: it allows the government to require designated bodies and entities to work.
