The anniversary of independence is 17 August. Gabon’s official gazette lists 16–17 August as the Independence anniversary, and the public-holiday period begins on 16 August.[1]

The road to independence

Gabon became a French colony in the 19th century and later formed part of French Equatorial Africa. The Presidency of Gabon records that independence was proclaimed on 17 August 1960 and that Léon Mba was elected president six months later.[2]

The anniversary commemorates Gabon’s accession to sovereignty. Government accounts describe it as a national occasion connected with sovereignty, national symbols and public remembrance.[2][3]

Official events can include ceremonies, public decorations and military parades.
