Flag Day in the Faroe Islands
Flag Day, or Flaggdagur, is observed in the Faroe Islands on 25 April. It recalls the wartime recognition of Merkið for Faroese ships and celebrates a flag that became a national symbol on land and at sea.[1]
A flag shaped by history
Merkið means “Banner”, “Ensign” or “the mark”. Faroese students in Copenhagen designed it using Nordic colours and a cross, and it was first hoisted in the Faroe Islands on 22 June 1919, in Fámjin.[1]
The flag’s public meaning grew amid disagreement over which flag Faroese people and vessels could use. During the Second World War, Germany occupied Denmark and Britain occupied the Faroe Islands. On 25 April 1940, British authorities recognised Merkið as the marine flag of the Faroe Islands, after Faroese demands and protests in Tórshavn.[1]
From marine flag to national symbol
After the war, the flag’s status was part of discussions between the Faroe Islands and Denmark. The Government of the Faroe Islands’ account says the 1948 Home Rule Act recognised Merkið as the Faroese flag both on land and at sea. The Løgting designated 25 April as Flag Day in 1949.[1]
The flag’s design is a red Nordic cross with blue edging on a white field. The official account describes the design as following Nordic flag traditions and explains the colours and cross through Christian symbolism, Faroese colours and Nordic connections.[1]
How the day is observed
Flag Day began as a public observance in Tórshavn during the war. From 1947, celebrations there included brass band music, parades and speeches; the official account says the day is now celebrated throughout the Faroe Islands.[1]
In 1955, Flag Day became a school holiday, and it is now celebrated like other public holidays.[1]
