On April 1, 1955, the EOKA organization claimed responsibility for explosions in several of the island’s largest cities, marking the beginning of its campaign against British rule. The movement expressed the Greek Cypriot desire for liberation and union with Greece, so the anniversary recalls a particular political goal as well as the struggle against colonial administration.[1]

Work, shops, and services

April 1 is included in Cyprus’s official employment guidance among paid time-off days for employees in retail stores, hotels, and leisure centres. For other undertakings, the guidance says time off is regulated by individual contracts, agreements, or collective agreements. This means the date’s public-holiday status does not by itself establish the same day off for every employee.[3]

The Labour Department’s employment guide says general shops must remain closed on April 1. It separately identifies specialized shops, including convenience stores and bakeries, with their own operating rules, so some services may still be available.
