The path to independence

On 7 September 1822, Prince Pedro proclaimed Brazil’s independence by the Ipiranga stream in what is now São Paulo. The date became a national symbol of the country’s political separation from Portugal.[3]

The break was not a single, peaceful event experienced in the same way throughout the territory. The National Archives describes differing provincial positions and conflicts during the process. In Bahia, fighting continued until Portuguese troops left Salvador in July 1823; Bahia commemorates 2 July as its own independence day.[3][4]

Civic-military parades are a visible part of Independence Day observances. Official accounts document parades at Brasília’s Esplanade of the Ministries and public processions in other cities, including Curitiba. These events have included military and security forces, students and civic groups.[4][5]

What to expect on the day

Because 7 September is a national holiday, public and private activity may be limited, while services considered indispensable may continue. Local event arrangements can also affect traffic near parade routes.
